We start this new year with a plan to improve ourself.

Perhaps you are scratching your head like I am and wondering :
Where are we going and why am I in this hand basket?
Which is my way of saying it looks like things are heading to hell in a hand basket.
While that is still relevant, as we begin this year of 2023, I want to change the tone from just recognizing that we are battling many challenging things in our lives and countries to focusing on what can we do to change the things around each one of us using the tools and truth we have available. It is up to each one of us to move things in a positive direction. What do I consider a positive direction?
In a word it is freedom.

B12 DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS include:

Following a vegetarian or vegan diet: Since plants can’t provide your body with B12, if you’re following a strict vegetarian or vegan diet, you may be at increased risk of developing a vitamin B12 deficiency.
Having celiac or Crohn’s disease: Certain conditions like Crohn’s or celiac disease can prevent your body from absorbing the nutrients it needs, which can lead to B12 deficiency.
Taking heartburn medications: Medications to relieve heartburn work by reducing your stomach’s acid production levels. But this, in turn, means there isn’t enough stomach acid to absorb B12.
Getting weight-loss surgery: Some weight-loss surgeries affect your body’s ability to absorb B12.
Aging: Elderly people are at much higher risk of B12 deficiency than younger people. As our bodies age, our stomachs produce lower levels of stomach acid, which makes it more difficult for our bodies to absorb B12 from foods. Though numbers vary, an estimated 10 to 15 percent of people over the age of 60 suffer from B12 deficiency.
People with helicobacter pylori infection. Intrinsic factor is a protein made by stomach cells that's necessary for B12 absorption. H. pylori bacteria can destroy intrinsic factor, thereby preventing B12 absorption.
People who take antacids, which have a tendency to interfere with B12 absorption, especially over time
Patients who take metformin for low blood sugar, as the drug interferes with B12 absorption, doubling your risk of deficiency
Anyone taking a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) like Prevacid or Nexium or H2 blocker such as Pepcid or Zantac. Research shows taking PPIs for more than two years increases your risk of B12 deficiency by 65%
Women taking birth control pills for an extended period of time, as the estrogen impairs absorption
People who have taken antibiotics, as these drugs have been shown to induce vitamin B12 deficiency
People exposed to nitrous oxide (laughing gas), which can wipe out whatever B12 reserves you may have in your body.
Researchers believe three factors are involved in today’s widespread B12 deficiency:
Many people don’t have enough stomach acidity to separate the vitamin B12 from dietary proteins.
Factory-farmed meat and poultry (the most common types consumed today) contain lower levels of vitamin B12.
Insufficient production of intrinsic factor that is required for B12 to be absorbed in your small intestine. This can be a result of aging or an autoimmune disease.
HOW TO GET MORE B12 IN YOUR DIET
vitamin B12 is found almost exclusively in animal tissues, including meat, fish, poultry, eggs and seafood, there are a few plant sources. Plant foods like seaweed, algae and mushrooms aren’t reliable sources. Some actually act as vitamin B12 analogs that, instead of helping, block the uptake of vitamin B12 and increase your body’s requirements

HOW MUCH B12 SHOULD YOU TAKE
There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to how much B12 you should take in a day, but there are some recommended guidelines you can follow to get a general idea.
The National Institutes of Health recommends 2.4 micrograms of vitamin B12 a day for adults. The amount that children need each day increases from 0.4 micrograms for newborns up to 2.4 at age 14. Women who are pregnant should strive for 2.6 micrograms per day, while those who are breastfeeding need 2.8 micrograms per day
What I take
The dosages above are way below what I take daily. I use the 5000 mcg liquid B12 or lozenge B12 under the tongue twice a day. Do your research but in my research I have not found that B12 has toxic levels. Given its importance in nerve and immune function and that it is easily obtainable and inexpensive I will continue my protocol until I learn about or experience reasons not to do so.
